According to U.S. statistics, in 2016, the United States imported 29.96 million tons of steel from the world, a year-on-year decrease of 14.8%, and the amount was 22.3 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 26.4%. This further intensified the pressure on the international steel market.

A spokesperson for the China Iron and Steel Association stated that China's steel exports to the US are very limited and will not affect the security of the US steel industry at all. The main source of steel imported by the United States is other countries, not China. According to Chinese statistics, China exported 1.17 million tons of steel to the US in 2016, accounting for 1% of China's overall export volume, with a value of US$1.7 billion, accounting for 3% of China's overall steel export value. According to U.S. statistics, in 2016, the U.S. imported 789,000 tons of steel from China, accounting for 2.6% of the total import volume of the U.S., with a value of 910 million U.S. dollars, accounting for 4.1% of the total U.S. steel imports.

A spokesman for the China Iron and Steel Association said that in fact, China and the United States are also facing the problem of global steel overcapacity. As a big country in steel production, consumption and trade, China has taken concrete measures to resolve excess capacity. In 2016, the iron and steel industry exited more than 65 million tons of production capacity. In 2017, the iron and steel production capacity will continue to be resolved, and the structural adjustment, transformation and upgrading of the steel industry will be vigorously promoted.
